It’s now more than a year ago, the LT-3100S GMDSS was released.
Sometimes we see reluctancy from local authorities and classification societies in approving our terminal as GMDSS Ship Earth Station (SES).
Why this reluctancy? Typically, we see three reasons:
• Lack of knowledge about the new SOLAS regulations
• Missing local approvals
• Missing MSI coverage
The missing MSI coverage is out of our hands. Iridium and IMO are continuously working on this task and have direct contact to most of the MSI providers.
However, we – and you – can do something about the two first reasons.
Make sure to inform skeptical authorities about the new SOLAS resolutions and approvals:
- All flag states have approved the IMO SOLAS CONVENTION (SOLAS) – including Chapter 4 covering GMDSS
- Any additions or changes to the SOLAS – typically called MSC resolutions – must be approved by the flag states, as soon as they are adopted by IMO
- These resolutions are covering Iridium GMDSS (adopted in 2018):
- Resolution MSC.436(99): New definition of SES. No longer only Inmarsat-C but changed to “Recognized mobile satellite service”
- Resolution MSC.451(99): Approval of Iridium as GMDSS satellite service provider
Furthermore, you can inform that Iridium GMDSS terminals have already been installed under the following flags:
