The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has confirmed its intention to approve the Iridium satellite network as a recognised provider of Global Maritime Distress Safety System services, joining the single current recognised satellite service provider, Inmarsat.

The Danish company, Lars Thrane A/S, participated in tests of the LT-3100 Iridium terminal with Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centres (JRCC) in several countries as a part of the MSC approval procedure. All tests proved ground and space equipment – and all communications lines to the JRCCs.
